DomeSketch vs Sonostar Hub calculators
Four calculators (standard and mega hubs, dome and sphere) that give pipe cut lengths for Sonostar's PVC hub connectors — the hub width already deducted — for 2V to 6V, plus a 3D dome-cover configurator that leads to their checkout.
Also listed in the builders directory (unpaid, unranked). That listing and this page are separate: the directory never mentions this ranking, and this page judges the tool alone.
Where Sonostar Hub calculators leads
- Cut lengths for their hubs are ready to saw: the hub width is already taken off, which no general calculator does.
- Colour-coded strut table matching their hub colours, in inches and centimetres, for seven dome variants.
- A cover configurator that ends in a real order.
Where DomeSketch does something it doesn't
- The lengths are for Sonostar hubs and PVC only; use them with anything else and every strut is short.
- Their 3V is a flat-base variant with four strut lengths, so its numbers cannot be checked against the standard tables.
- No openings, no site, no materials beyond their kit.
Pick Sonostar Hub calculators if
- You are building with Sonostar hubs — use their numbers, not ours.
Pick DomeSketch if
- You are using any other hub, or lumber, or want the dome as a building.
The run — 20 ft · 3V · 5/8 sphere, 2026-09-20
Entered: Megadome calculator, 3V 5/9 tab, Diameter 20 ft, Calculate.
- A 35.56 in × 30, B 41.87 in × 35, C 46.58 in × 80, D 48.93 in × 20 (4 in already deducted per strut); hubs 15 / 6 / 40; height 11.88 ft; floor 294.3 sq ft
- DomeSketch: three lengths, A 41.8 in × 30, B 48.4 in × 55, C 49.5 in × 80, vertex to vertex; hubs 15 / 6 / 40
Sonostar's 3V 5/9 is a flat-base variant with four strut lengths and a hub deduction, so only the totals compare: 165 struts and 61 hubs in both. Their numbers are right for their hubs; ours are right for a plain vertex-to-vertex frame.

About our side of this page
DomeSketch is our product; this page is written by us. Its numbers for the run are computed from the geometry when the page is built and are the same as the reference table. What DomeSketch does not do:
- Class I icosahedral only, 1V–8V: no octahedral, no Class II or III, no Kruschke or Mexican subdivisions (Acidome, Simply Differently).
- No bevel, dihedral or mitre angles and no timber cut lengths net of a joint (Geo-Dome, Acidome).
- No reverse calculation from a strut length (Domerama, Desert Domes); no lath cut optimisation (Simply Differently).
- Feet and inches only in the interface; millimetres only in the STL export.
- Prices and mix yields are placeholders and the page says so; the materials estimate is rough.
- No hub cut deductions for any specific connector (Sonostar).
